Church Music Institute – Winter Retreat

Musicians from across the nation will gather at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Dallas for the
Church Music Institutes’ Winter Retreat January 2 – 5 to explore new ideas, techniques, and
resources in church music for the New Year.

Renowned church musicians, including Dr. Don Horisberger, emeritus of the Chicago Symphony
Chorus and Church of the Holy Spirit in IL, Dr. Allen Hightower, Director of Choral Studies at
the University of North Texas, Ethan Haman, organist at Yale University’s Marquand Chapel,
and Ellen Johnston, retired Director of Music, Liturgy and the Arts at Virginia Theological
Seminary, will lead workshops on conducting, new choral and organ music, organ improvisation,
and vocal techniques for volunteer choirs.

Two of the retreat’s events are open to the public. On Saturday evening (January 4) the Institute
will stage a Silent Movie Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. The movies will be accompanied by music
from St. Luke’s Aeolian Skinner organ played by Haman. On Sunday evening (January 5) at
5:00 p.m. the Retreat will conclude with a Hymn Festival featuring Dallas area choirs and
Retreat participants.

The Church Music Institute, headquartered in Dallas, is dedicated to the advancement and
stewardship of the best* liturgical and sacred music for Christian worship through
educational workshops and courses, church music festivals, and research on current issues
in church music. CMI has one of the most extensive libraries of sacred choral and organ
music in the world.
