THE LANGUAGES OF THE SAINTS: finding the many expressions of their voices
SATURDAY MORNING ONLINE WORKSHOP, SEPTEMBER 30, 10:00 a.m.
REV. KATHRYN JOHNSON, retired United Methodist Deacon and Organist/Minister of Music
Musicians through the ages have given voice to their celebration of the saints of Christendom in anthems, Requiem masses and other music to suit the vast Scriptural expressions which accompany the great festival of All Saints. As a continuation of the series she shared with CMI last year which she called “What Language Shall I Borrow?” Kathryn Johnson will share the next in that series, which takes us into the fall season with a seldom used but powerful practice of borrowing the words of great authors and theologians who have had eloquent and meaningful reflections on various aspects of the matter of death, dying, and remembrance, which are central to our services of worship at this time.
This workshop will bring you a worship service, using as an example the Faure’ Requiem, showing how images from great artists and reflections from such authors as C. S. Lewis, Alesander Solzhenitsyn, Kahlil Gibran, and Julian of Norwich, and can accompany the portions of the mass and bring home the meaning of this day in a poignant new way.
“In order to be at peace, it is necessary to feel a sense of history – that you are both part of what has come before and part of what is yet to come. Being thus surrounded, you are not alone; and the sense of urgency that pervades the present is put in perspective.” -Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, Death: The Final Stage of Growth
